Dr Mark Griffiths is a teacher, trainer, author, language tester and academic researcher. From the earliest days, Mark was fascinated with learning languages, from French at primary school and German at high school, to any other language he could greedily consume once he was free to explore the world. Mark studied languages and language science at university, gaining a BA, MA and PhD in Linguistics.
Professionally, Mark started as, and for many years was, a language teacher, gaining experience teaching English to students from around the world. He then moved into coursebook development and writing, and ultimately language assessment, which has allowed Mark to work with teachers in a wide range of educational systems and settings in more than 25 countries.
Mark is a passionate advocate of the benefits of learning multiple languages, but also of questioning how we learn and teach them, how we measure learning, and what would happen if we did things differently. From his many inter-disciplinary years in language teaching, teacher training and language testing, Mark has witnessed how some of the biggest steps forward come from questioning the status quo, narrowing the gap between those who teach and those who test, and creating a better mutual understanding of how language assessments can be used in language teaching as a force for good, rather than as a punitive formality or a simple data collection process.
